Pompus upper class twat who is ignorant and wreaks of a high standard life, prostitution for the upper class is the norm, which adds to the vunerable being abused, dont ever suck up to these high class fuckwits who are clearly leading this country, Well done Russell and they looked utter snobs!! do you realise why we have the London Bombings? incapable imbasile idiots like you that are running this country too many people with too much power and too little understanding im afraid :-) Im ashamed to be British i really am :-( im on the next boat out of this country…nothing here for my children or me anymore, leave those Posh Snobs to face the Muslim Majority and they will see the lowlifes running this country fight for a cause :-) and best of british luck to them too :-)
Whilst Brand is a very articulate, well spoken and a well delivered individual…too many of his arguments/responses were laced with abuse or underlying sarcasm…which, whilst funny, is beside the point and it’s a shame Brand reverted to it.
Peter’s challenge is he is coming from the Daily Mail stereotype so is already on the back foot. He didn’t help himself and responded to Brand’s quips.
The biggest problem wasn’t the bickering between these two… it was the painfully lame presenter with her annoying voice and unhelpful approach to questioning.
I think if these two could get together and discuss without any sort of insults then we may come to a good conclusion.
It’s all about ‘feelings’!!!! and Peter Hitchen isnt allowing human beings to have feelings. Unfortunately we are not taught how to deal with feelings especially painful one’s so we bottle them up inside because we are scared and often criticised for having those feelings. People express their feelings differently – a minority are balanced and manage not to let emotion eat away at them – some get angry and sometimes violent (a cry for help) – some get depressed and go inside themselves – some rely on anti-depressants to num all emotions – then we move into even more extreme cases of illness where a human being struggling with their own self worth, self esteem etc. turns to alcohol, drugs, food, no food and is then a victim of their troubled mindin an even more unhealthy way. It’s not rocket science and to prevent more people suffering from many illnesses we need to support society with compassion, praise and empathy. The government could do things in school to teach children owe to express their feelings effectively and safely. Adults would benefit from this to as well all need more positive and less negative comments in our lives to help us like ourselves. Would love to get involved with this campaign to help people as I have experienced depression and it is a very dark and lonely place. I have a huge ammount of sympathy for people with an addiction as it was not their intention and should not be critised but taught that there is a positive future without the substance they are addicted to and they are allowed to like themselves. Well done Russell Brand for being honest I think you are approaching this absolutely the right way and look forward to seeing more. Regards, Charlotte.
I saw the Newsnight debate and thought the Daily Mail guy had an axe to grind and let that get in the way of a sensible debate. I don’t think he can have experience of addiction and he has a public school mentality of ‘us’ and ‘them’, which is based on ‘them’ being inherently bad and undeserving of compassion. How many drug raids do you hear of in ‘posh’ areas? The people Russell spoke to on his documentary, which I have just watched, sounded like working class people, where are all the upper class accents? Is it just the working class using the NHS who are stuck on the treadmill of methadone? There must be more drug use in the high earning households than is ever reported in the press. My own experience is an alcoholic brother of 30 years+. He is sort of invisible as he is a high functioning, working alcoholic who is at the core coping with feelings from his childhood by blanking them out. I believe drink and drugs are self medication to avoid difficult feelings, usually from childhood, but not always . I think Russell is right, abstinence is the way to start feeling the pain, then you tackle that pain, the hard part. Thanks Russell for speaking out – the percentage of people coming off drugs thro methadone, “not even in double figures” and that as a “pointless” exercise should win the argument.
Hi Russell, the lady who you helped into treatment was so fortunate to have you advise and assist her. I’m sure she will do it one day. I have been trying to find help for 10 months and the only option I unfortunately have is a methadone ‘script which isn’t ideal (the clinic will confirm this week when I can be assessed for that). The last thing I want is another habit. I hope one day to be clean like yourself .
What it appears that Israel is trying to do is present enough rope for the Arabs to hang themselves with.r nThey are offering relatively safe steps to increase the light on the subject but Obama and the State Department continue with their eyes wide shut!
You recently spoke of how you regret not helping Amy Winehouse overcome her addiction issues. Perhaps you can make it up to her by reaching out to her ex-husband and the love of her life, Blake Fielder-Civil. He’s in desperate need of help and you seem to know how to approach addicts. The clock is ticking and it’s only a matter of time before his little son will be left fatherless. Please help him!
I have just watched with interest and Russell I could of kissed you, I really do hope that people have take notice. Having lost a battle with my addictive son to drugs, I will be showing him this to see if it makes sense.
They should tackle this at the start and not wait until its too late.
If only you could do more, I hae been fighting for years to address this.
Maybe one day the system and attitudes will change but it needs a VOICE.
Like so many of the other “problems” we have in our society, rarely does one ask WHY and try to approach from the root.
.
Also, just because something is a law doesn’t make it right, or even necessary, as in the law that makes it illegal to use marajuana. When things are made illegal for political or financial gain (control) more than out of genuine concern for persons’ well being, many intelligent people will choose to ignore the law simply because it makes no sense.
If drug use keeps increasing as mr. hitchens repeats, WHY is that? What is the root of the desire and increase? The increase certainly has little to do with the laws.
People use drugs to escape, to learn, have fun, change perspectives, to relax, or simply out of boredom, etc. And apparently, if one looks at the extreme rise and frequency of the legal prescription drugs (at least here in the US…true elsewhere?), a ton of people are depressed, sad, anxious, and/or generally stressed out. WHY IS THAT? Start there and you will have a more balanced society which has less depression and need to escape. *I wonder how much push Big Pharma gives in keeping “drugs” illegal…ours of course, not theirs.
In my opinion, as Russell said, Love and Compassion will go much further in helping the problem than will belittling and caging a human being. (Getting worse here because our prision system has turned caging humans in to big business. How sick is that?
I am learning when dealing with extreme conservatives, to begin with questioning the justice of their idea in the first place. Often when they have to say WHY they do what they do or think what they think, they can’t go very far because 1) they have no personal experience of the situation and/or 2) the concept is not even their own but something they’ve been endoctrinated into thinking and they’ve never really questioned the validity of such a belief. Seriously, try it sometime.
just my 2cents.
Russell, I love your “balls” (heh)…wish more would use their celebrity as you do…THANK YOU! great topic
Both have good points: Peter Hitchens for initial prevention and Russell Brand for helping addicts. Peter says that if sentencing were tougher in the first place then this might prevent people trying drugs, however Peter Hitchens does need to consider the issue of those who did not choose to start taking drugs: those that are born in to it; those that are young children and teenagers that didn’t have the right sort of guidance to help them steer clear of drugs. This is why we relinquish children from their responsibility to some degree. That’s why when you ask a thirty year old that got hooked on crack or heroine when they were thirteen “are you responsible for your addiction or not?” the answer is no. These people do need compassion and help, as Russell states.
I was really disappointed to see Peter Hitchens insulting Russell by pretending not to be aware of Russell Brands’ insightfulness on this topic and intelligence. That’s not the sign of clever man. A clever man would listen – as Russell did.
I’m glad Russell was laughing at Peter Hitchens arrogance but was disappointed Russell didn’t have more of a say on the matter here.
P.S. Please don’t work with Gervais Russell Brand. You’re much better than that ;0)

Dear Russell Brand,
Today, I read this heartbreaking article on Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2190028/Sometimes-I-wish-son-died-like-Amy-At-torment-As-Amy-Winehouse-s-ex-husband-wakes-coma-near-fatal-drugs-binge-mother-makes-heartbreaking-admission.html

Says it all really.
