wow i know i get on your case for being british, an asshat, and an attention whore, but wow i had no idea you had to put up with asswipe fish faces like that guy. see why having guns is better? u can just shoot those kind of people. on the off chance that you didn’t feel like doing your civil duty you could rest comfortably knowing he wouldn’t make it three steps out of his apartment before the neighborhood immune system, it’s criminal element, just wipes him out for being an easy unworldly mark. are there really that many people over there that look like fish?
I applaud you for being able to stay within love for this man, even when he seems to be taking out past frustrations on you, therefor treating you unfairly in my eyes. I’m not familiar enough with the topic discussed to feel like I can make any informed remarks. I can say that that it seems to me that an approach out of love will always be more effective than an approach based on fear. Thank you for promoting this idea. My last point is that I disagree with mister Hitchens when he criticises your lighthearted way of debating. I think it’s a wonderful talent that you can debate a serious issue without it becoming all heavy and dark. There’s too much of that in the world already. Keep on spreading the light!
Dear Chip and Russ,Hitichins is a pompous idiot who belongs in the 18th century,…..speaking from my experiance of 22 years of heroin Addiction, 15 of those addicted to Methadone aswell i have endured,i have no where to turn and in Deperate need of Help,the girl featured in the bbc 3 documentary obviously wasnt ready to give up n so walked out,i wish so much i could be offerd the same revellent treatment,i would NEVER give up,i just need a Chance,please offer treatment to those of us commited to staying Drug Free.Spread the Love.

Russell, I watched the documentary and debate with interest, but they left me unclear just what you meant by “abstain from all drugs”. Does that include tobacco? It’s that I noticed that one centre you visited had a smoking area where clients were smoking whilst trying to stop their drug use, but it is very clear that tobacco hugely reduces a user’s ability to control their actions, which would likely seem crucial in abstinence from other drugs. Ignoring that tobacco is a very powerful drug in its own right is likely to make abstinence attempts and programmes fail.
Hitchmeister needs to relax, if it were his daughter I think he would probably prefer she was checked in to rehab. Love and compassion to all. Learn to love then you can learn to live.
Peter Hitchens was not on Intelligence2. That was his brother. Sad that people don’t know these things yet want to add comments. This completely invalidates your statements.
Mike: you are not well informed. The debate on intelligence 2 re war on drugs occurred after Christopher passed away. It was broadcast on Google +. In fact, part of the exchange with Peter during the debate in question was in Russell’s documentary. Peter called Russell a selfish kid to which Russell gave the greatest comeback. See it on you tube; it is a terrific debate.
Once again in this country a person arrogantly pursues a public issue with out thought and bringing personal feelings into a discussion. Addiction is an illness caused by a substance whether it be drugs or alcohol that a persons body and brain craves beyond their control. In order to help people it not about punishing the users , the punishment should be given severely to the vile greed driven provider of these drugs . The people who bring these drugs into the country , who live a life of wealth from their dirty work. They are the people to punish , not the addicts . …….Before anyone tells me I don’t know what I am talking about I worked as a nurse for 20 years , the last five working in a hospice., So I have seen at first hand the suffering caused by peoples addiction’s Close to were I live you daily see people hanging around waiting for a fix from the local dealer , it sickens me that it’s not these vermin being publicly attacked on TV debate not a celebrity who had the guts to publicly put himself on the firing line
There r many ppl out there who r desperate and who are stuck, methodone is a horrible drug itself and many find they use on top. The propper help just is not available! Esp for ppl who like me work and keep a normal way of life but r still trapped with this addiction. Well done russell. If it was me I would have been so angry, thought you handled it relatively well.
It makes me proud to be a recovering addict with people like Russel as my spokes person. Very commendable speech Russel. I wanted to rip Peter’s arm off and beat him with it from his opening sentence. I currently work with people suffering from serious mental illnesses and head trauma that have less delusional thought processes than this Peter Hitchens.
I will definitely keep Russel’s example of maintained control the next time I am confronted with narcissistic narrow minded individuals. Oh look, my mom just arrived… time to practice.
