Stimulating read with a deft imperial tribute (better than most sport writers, especially the ones that think they know football but have never kicked one?!). …Fergie was ‘larger than life’ in the world of football and did seem to bend time and make impossible things happen. I would add making the ‘whole bigger the sum of the parts’ was also his talent, making others believe they could be natural winners (and they were for over two decades). I loved the way he took every challenge head on, and the honesty of the victory or the aftermath. I believe he respected the game and never thought he was larger than United or the sport (compared to other managers today). He earned his victories by building enduring teams and didn’t buy trophies ostentatiously. He also had a lovely wit when it came to troubled times. I think only people that have had tough upbringings have that, they can make the world look funny at the toughest times, and eternally happy at the best of times.

Football as metaphor, what a wonderful idea, you could very well have a career as a sports columnist, maybe an OpEd about sports as they relate to everyday life. I am currently reading Irons in the Fire and Articles of Faith, was able to find 1st edition hard covers, very enjoyable reading. Hope you’re keeping a journal. ;) You’re Brilliant!

I was very pleased to see Nik at a little place on Los Feliz in Hollywood last year, all alone. I was with two friends and we had stopped for a bite before going to your taping at Solar. I knew it was him and wasn’t sure if we shoudl bother him but as we were leaving we walked over and introduced ourselves. He has the most beautiful blue eyes and he’s quite handsome. Was such a pleasure seeing him in my neighborhood enjoying a bite. Great article, love how there are no wasted words, and that you are so passionate about the game. Love you and your mate. Come back to L.A. soon. xo

You are a funny man. Your writing style cracks me right up, whether you are writing about football, fame, drugs or sex, you have a way with words that’s makes it entertaining. I give this piece a sg mark. Which means it is “silly good”, praise does not come any higher than such a mark, so you should rightly be proud of your work. Perhaps even frame it and put it on the wall next to your childhood pictures.
